More than 150,000 of the 187,000 students in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) are economically disadvantaged. These students face many stressors that affect their ability to focus while at school, such as hunger, lack of appropriate shoes or clothing, and inconsistent access to hygiene supplies.
Each Houston ISD school employs a staff member to help identify the basic needs of their students, and to help find resources to address issues such as students’ mental health, homelessness, transportation needs, food insecurity, and family crises.
The staff members also seek to provide basic items that some students lack, such as food, clothing, school supplies, and hygiene items.
COR Houston seeks to partner with school staff members who serve HISD’s most impoverished students, and works with them to try to provide them with essential items they request. We deliver items directly to our staff partners, who then give them to their students.
We target schools where at least 90% of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged, most of which are in communities that lack a reliable network of businesses and organizations to support the school.
