
Kay Wasden
Board PresidentKay has lived in Houston for 27 years and has raised two children here. She is passionate about children, literacy, and education equity. A practicing musician and former educator, Kay started COR Houston after seeing the enormous need for food, clothing, and hygiene items first-hand at an HISD middle school close to her home.

Angelica Almaraz
With over 13 years of experience in education and family support services, Angelica is dedicated to empowering children & families through intentional support. Most recently a Coordinator of Wraparound Services for Houston ISD, she led a team of community resource specialists, providing students with basic needs as well as social and emotional supports. She previously worked at BakerRipley Head Start as both a Family Wellness Specialist and Family Development Worker; true to her Mexican-American roots, she is also a 12-year volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s International Committee. Angelica is a native Houstonian and proud University of Houston graduate, and is passionate about creating equitable support systems for her community.

Karen Davis
As a proud graduate of HISD from Kindergarten through 12th grade, Karen is deeply committed to giving back to the community that shaped her education. A former practicing attorney, Karen currently works as a parent coach and support provider for an adolescent outdoor therapy company. Karen is passionate about helping individuals identify their strengths and realize their full potential. The Davis family has greatly enjoyed participating in COR’s College Pack program. Their goal is to help this initiative grow each year to serve more deserving HISD seniors as they transition to college. Karen also serves on the board of the FreshStart Foundation, which provides financial assistance to help teens and young adults from families with limited means to afford treatment, counseling and support.

Elneita Hutchins-Taylor
Elneita served as General Counsel to the Houston Independent School District from 2004 until her retirement in 2022. Before joining HISD, she was School Attorney / General Counsel to the Cypress-Fairbanks School District and Counsel to the Superintendent at the District of Columbia Public Schools, among other roles in public education and government. Elneita is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, with a BA from Wellesley College. Her local nonprofit board service has included the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston and the Children’s Museum of Houston; she chaired the boards of both the Texas Association of School Boards Council of School Attorneys and the State Bar School Law Section Board. Elneita is currently a member of the Port City Chapter of the Links, Incorporated and a mentor at Lawson Academy Charter School, and is an experienced speaker on education law.

Paul K. Franks
A licensed Certified Public Accountant with decades of experience across private industry, professional services, real estate, manufacturing, and nonprofits, Paul is also committed to community service. He has served on neighborhood association boards, synagogue boards of directors, and men’s club leadership, and has helped shape community-wide Jewish learning initiatives. Paul is especially passionate about supporting all students and educators in Houston. Some of his most meaningful board service was through The Pursuit Center and during the formative years of the Gateway Academy, a non-profit Houston school for students with social and learning differences in grades 6–12. He shares COR’s view that when children have the basic supplies and resources they need, classrooms become places of focus, confidence, and possibility.

William Sherwood
Bill practiced civil litigation in Texas for about 50 years, most recently at Hartline Barger LLP. Before retirement he tried many cases to jury verdict, and was active in lawyer groups including the American Board of Trial Advocacy, by which he was board certified. He was also board certified in both personal trial law and civil trial law for more than 20 years. After growing up in New Orleans, Bill received a BA from Davidson College in North Carolina, then earned his JD at Tulane Law School. His public service includes four years as an elected Council member for the City of Bunker Hill Village, as well as board membership of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center and the Kiwanis Club of Houston Foundation. He is currently on the boards of the National Board of Trial Advocacy and of the Municipal Utility District serving his residential subdivision.

Keith Solomon
Board Vice PresidentKeith is Director of Insurance Solutions at the financial services firm of Seth & Alexander. In addition to a 46-plus-year career in the insurance industry, he currently is committed to working on a number of charitable endeavors. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Brotherhood of Congregation Emanu El, Odyssey House Houston, the Kiwanis Foundation of Houston, and the Emergency Aid Coalition. Passionate about both public education and community assistance, Keith is thrilled to support COR as a Board Member. He is married to Dr. Carrie Altman and has three children and five grandchildren.

Cristina Vetrano
Cristina is the Chief Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Houston. She joined the COR Houston board because she has three children who have all benefited from a public school education. She has seen the enormous need over the years and has been honored to help COR Houston in any way she can. Cristina has been in the not-for-profit sector for over 30 years and has served as President & CEO of CanCare, Executive Director of Kids Meals, and in various roles at the American Red Cross.

Steve Vetrano
Board TreasurerA founding Board Member of COR Houston, Steve is the CEO of Vita Living, which provides residential living, case management, and weekday enrichment programs for more than 400 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across seven Houston counties, addressing a critical need for this greatly underserved and vulnerable population. Before joining Vita Living, he served as CEO of the Texas Gulf Region of the American Red Cross and CEO of Avondale House.

The Rev. Francene Young
Board SecretaryFrancene is the Dean of Administration of the Diocesan Iona School for Ministry, where she also chairs the Diocesan Racial Justice Committee. Ordained in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, she served as the Vicar at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Houston’s Third Ward from 2012-2021. Prior to ordination, Francene was a Human Resources professional for over 35 years, primarily in the healthcare and oil industries, where she also mentored young professionals. She received an MPH from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and a BS in Social Services from Cleveland State University. Having grown up in public housing in Cleveland, Ohio, she is passionate about helping young people succeed.

Anne Furse
Board Member EmeritusAnne became involved in COR Houston while working on a project to help restore HISD’s libraries and seeing the differences in resources among Houston schools. A former lawyer and a mother of three, she is active in a variety of Houston community organizations and is particularly interested in literacy, environmental conservation, and education. She is the founder of Friends of HISD Libraries and also currently serves on the boards of the Houston Seminar and Yale Women Houston.
COR Houston has no paid staff; volunteers manage all of our purchasing, deliveries, bookkeeping, and other activities.
