Kay Wasden

Founder & Executive Director

Kay has lived in Houston for 27 years and has raised two children here. She is passionate about children, literacy, and education equity. A practicing musician and former educator, Kay started COR Houston after seeing the enormous need for food, clothing, and hygiene items first-hand at an HISD middle school close to her home.

Michele Cardenas

Communications and Marketing Strategist

Michele has served as Community Relations Director for The Alliance, a nonprofit that assists refugees, immigrants, and underserved Houstonians; as Communications Specialist for Houston Hospice; and as Marketing Director and Digital Editor Manager for JP Global Digital and World Oil Magazine, and in a variety of communications and marketing roles in the oil and gas industry. She has also advised the Friends of Down Syndrome and the Harris County Department of Education, and is a graduate of United Way of Greater Houston’s Project Blueprint and a member of Leadership Houston Class XLIII.

Anne Furse

Board Vice President

Anne became involved in COR Houston while working on a project to help restore HISD’s libraries and seeing the differences in resources among Houston schools. A former lawyer and a mother of three, she is active in a variety of Houston community organizations and is particularly interested in literacy, environmental conservation, and education. She is a founder of Friends of HISD Libraries and serves on the boards of the Houston Seminar and Yale Women Houston.

Rhonda Holmes

Director of Coalition and Expansion, United Against Human Trafficking

A community organizer with 20 years of experience, Rhonda plans events for vulnerable communities, mentors young people, and creates opportunities for Houstonians to make an impact. Currently Director of Coalition and Expansion for United Against Human Trafficking, Rhonda previously served as a Programs Manager and Senior Community Liaison with the City of Houston and the Houston Police Department. Her three children attended HISD, and she is passionate about public education. Rhonda is a United Way of Greater Houston Project Blueprint graduate.

Kira Promise

Fundraising Consultant

Kira has spent more than a decade in the nonprofit sector, most recently as Program Coordinator for Civic Heart Community Services, where her responsibilities included writing grant proposals to support occupational training and job placement for those in need. The first in her family to graduate from high school and college, Kira is the mother of two thriving young adults. Inspired by her experiences, she hopes to start her own non-profit organization focused on guiding young fathers toward fostering healthy relationships with their children.

Keith Solomon

Director of Insurance Solutions, Seth & Alexander

In addition to a 46-plus-year career in the insurance industry, Keith currently is committed to working on a number of charitable endeavors. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Brotherhood of Congregation Emanu El, Odyssey House Houston, the Kiwanis Foundation of Houston, and the Emergency Aid Coalition. Passionate about both public education and community assistance, Keith is thrilled to support COR as a Board Member. He is married to Dr. Carrie Altman and has three children and five grandchildren.

Cristina Vetrano

Chief Executive Officer, Ronald McDonald House Houston

Cristina joined the COR Houston board because she has three kids and they have all benefited from a public school education. However, she has seen the enormous need over the years and has been honored to help COR Houston in any way she can. Cristina has been in the not-for-profit sector for over 30 years and has served as President & CEO of CanCare, Executive Director of Kids Meals, and in various roles at the American Red Cross.

Steve Vetrano

Chief Executive Officer, Avondale House

Steve is the CEO of Avondale House, which provides specialized, high-quality education and services to children and adults with autism. Before joining Avondale, he served as CEO of the Texas Gulf Region of the American Red Cross.

COR Houston has no paid staff; volunteers manage all of our purchasing, deliveries, bookkeeping, and other activities.
